WHAT I LOVE ABOUT THIS PAINTING
Vaqueros - the origin of the oft-used slang for cowboy, “buckaroo” - are in many ways the unsung heroes of the West. From South and Central America, through Mexico and into the southernmost reaches of the United States, Vaqueros live a life of rugged simplicity. Braving the elements and facing life one moment at a time to ensure the well-being of their livestock as well as themselves. More than a brotherhood; a way of living that has changed little over the past 400 years.

WHAT I LOVE ABOUT THIS PAINTING
In 1965, there was a 12 year old country boy who worked summers hauling hay. One day, he decided he’d rather be given a calf instead of wages…Pretty soon he had to calves and realized he’d better find himself a milk cow. One of the dairy farmers he worked for - admiring the boy’s gumption and strong work ethic - agreed to sell him Hazel, a beautiful Guernsey with kindness in her eyes and a swift kick to keep the young, would-be-farmer in line.
The boy grew into a fine, enterprising young man who bought and sold at auction many prized beef cattle and eventually - many years later - became the love of my life. So how could I say no when he “commissioned” me to paint Hazel, the beautiful beast who taught him a thing or two about raising livestock, helping to raise him in the process.
Wish I could have known her, but can’t help but lover her all these years later…

WHAT I LOVE ABOUT THIS PAINTING:
Every step of the way, Cherry is feminine and fearless…Her heart wide-open, arms outstretched and embracing all that life has to offer. A joyful smile, layers of pink (love and passion), riding through an endless blues sky (optimism) and standing tall in the saddle (confidence).
And the cherry blossoms? A universal reminder that life is beautiful, fragile, and short, so we must seize the day!

WHAT I LOVE ABOUT THIS PAINTING
Rosie! Rides again…among a symphony of decadent, pink roses to celebrate her independent spirit and can-do-anything attitude. This joyful piece is in honor of my sweet mom who lost her long battle with breast cancer in 2014. And a special “cheers” to all of the fearless women - our moms, sisters, and daughters - who’re battling - and winning! - their fights against cancer. Ride on, Rosie! Ride on!

What I Love About this Painting
Ladies! Never apologize for being a strong woman. The world needs strong women. Women who know how to lead and lift and build others up. Women who lean into life with courage, wisdom, and compassion. Tender and fierce. Independent. Imaginative. Full of fire!

WHAT I LOVE ABOUT THIS PAINTING
“One, if by land, and two, if by sea” - this phrase was coined by the American poet, Henry W. Longfellow in his poem, Paul Revere’s Ride. It was a reference to the secret signal orchestrated by Revere during his historic ride from Boston to Concord on the verge of American Revolutionary War. The signal was meant to alert patriots about the route the British troops chose to advance to Concord. The slaughter of the Bison during the 1800’s has been a hot topic here in the West and, for me, a very real result of the colonization of this incredible land we call America. Thankfully, there are many efforts underway to preserve and grow remaining herds so that they can, once again, take their rightful place on the plains and in the high valleys of the American West.
