WHAT I LOVE ABOUT THIS PAINTING

I grew up in a hunting family and late summers were all about the fall season. Pack trips into the mountains meant lots of preparation: organizing gear, loading and balancing panniers, and hauling horses and mules into the backcountry wilderness of the Bitterroot and Blue mountains of Montana, Washington and Idaho. Setting up Elk camp meant long days, steep trails, big skies, and clear, star-filled nights. Even as a kid, I knew what a gift it was to be immersed in the beauty of the wilderness, and it filled me with a sense of awe and wonder that lingers to this day. And from time to time, found treasures, such as a pair of spring sheds, would be carefully wrapped and brought home to bask in the glorious light of creation. A reminder to give thanks for all we had - and all we have been provided - in this world that continues to nourish and sustain us.

WHAT I LOVE ABOUT THIS PAINTING

Andrea Murphy is a talented artist who, together with her husband and children, lives and breathes the ranching life in Texas. She and I became friends through our shared love of art and the the beauty and strength of the American West. This painting - a surprisingly intimate portrait - is meaningful to me because it reminds me of the deep connection I had with my horse, Woody, who passed on to more heavenly pastures in 2021. Spending time in the saddle is always a wonderful way to experience the world, but to be on the ground - eye to eye, breath to breath - with these magnificent, curious and courageous animals is where the magic happens. For me, this painting captures the unbreakable bond and tender connection between a girl and her horse.
